1 – Removing an eggshell fragment
This is one of those hacks that I thought wouldn’t work because it seemed too good to be true. I was wrong!
Simply use a larger piece of eggshell to scoop up those pesky little fragments. It feels like magic.
2 – Use a spoon to skin a kiwi
This trick works best if your kiwi is ripe (not rock hard).
First, slice the ends off of a kiwi. Slide a spoon under the skin, and run it all the way around the kiwi, keeping it as close to the skin as possible without breaking through the skin.
You’ll be able to slide the skin right off!
Then just slice and serve.
3 – Hands-free pouring
This is kitchen hack that I’ve been using since I was a teen.
Cuff the top of a zippered plastic storage bag down around itself. This keeps the bag open and stable while you pour food into it!
4 – Neatly line a pan with parchment paper
This is something I learned from Christina of Dessert For Two.
Shoving parchment paper into a pan can be frustrating. To combat this, flip your pan upside down and wrap the parchment paper around the outside of it. Think of it like wrapping a present. Make sure to crease all of the edges well.
Now flip the pan and parchment paper around. You’ll have to do a bit of maneuvering and adjusting, but the parchment paper will fit in neatly.
5 – Quickly soften butter
If you forget to take butter out of the fridge to soften, don’t fret! You can get it to soften faster by chopping it into smaller pieces. Bonus points if you set it in a warm spot in your kitchen!
6 – Bring eggs to room temperature quickly
Along the same lines, you can quickly warm eggs to room temp by placing them in a bowl and covering them with very warm (not hot) water. Let them sit for about 5–10 minutes while you prep the rest of your recipe.
7 – Easily remove pomegranate seeds
As I described in my Pomegranate 101 post, it’s easy to get the arils of a pomegranate out by using a wooden spoon! First slice your pomegranate in half around the middle. Then hold it upside down over a bowl, and whack the back of it with a wooden spoon. The seeds will pop out!
8 – Evenly portion muffin batter
Use an ice cream scoop to evenly portion out muffin batter. The kind with the trigger release makes it easy to transfer the batter to the muffin tin: no trying desperately to get the batter off of a spoon.
9 – Prevent potatoes from browning
This is a trick I learned from my mom. If you want to peel your potatoes in advance, simply cover them with cold water to prevent them from browning. Your potatoes might retain a bit more water if they’re left overnight in the fridge like this. But if you’re making mashed potatoes with them, you probably won’t be able to tell the difference.
